DOWNTON will present “the ultimate moral dilemma” for Anna Bates.
The last series saw evil Mr Green (Nigel Harman) mown down by a speeding car after Anna admitted he had raped her.
And the show’s writers left a question mark hanging over whether the valet was pushed by Anna’s husband Mr Bates (Brendan Coyle).
Joanne Froggatt says: “It is the ultimate moral dilemma isn’t it? Whether or not Mr Bates did it or not is sort of beside the point.
“He has a genuine motive that most of us can connect with, and it’s sort of a death that you think, ‘Could that have happened by accident?’
“She does have this fear of, ‘What if he did go to London? What if he did know and things went too far?’
“She doesn’t believe Mr Bates would ever set out to murder somebody but she knows he could have really hurt Mr Green if he found out who he was.
“That’s an understandable emotion for a husband in that position and it would be at any time.”
